The Rivers State Hospitals Management Board (RSHMB) has launched a pilot programme to roll out the Balanced Scorecard Implementation across public secondary hospitals in the state, marking a significant step towards improved efficiency and service delivery within the health system.

Declaring the programme open, the Chief Medical Director of the Board, Dr. Bright Ogbonda, represented by the Director of Medical and Dental Services, Dr. Ishmael Jaja, described the initiative as part of the Board’s determined efforts to ensure that all secondary health facilities in the state operate at optimal capacity.

Dr. Jaja urged medical practitioners and representatives of secondary health facilities to apply the principles of the balanced scorecard in their daily operations to enhance patient care and overall performance. He further assured participants that issues identified through the scorecard would be systematically addressed before the next performance review meeting.

He added that the Board would take full ownership of the project and remain committed to scaling up improvements and sustaining progress across all hospitals under its supervision.

He commended Dr. Ogbonda, medical directors of secondary hospitals, and other stakeholders for embracing the project, noting that the innovation would serve as a benchmark for performance and accountability.

Also speaking, Dr. Foluke Adeniji, Co-investigator and Supervisor of the project, lamented the existing referral gap in the state’s healthcare system, where patients are sometimes referred directly from primary to tertiary facilities. She expressed optimism that the balanced scorecard framework would help normalize the referral process and streamline healthcare delivery.
