The Department of State Services, DSS, has filed a six-count charge against one Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume in Rivers State over alleged call for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s government through a military coup.
According to a Daily Post report, Onukwume, identified as a resident of Umusayo Layout in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, allegedly made the calls for a military take over in tweets posted on his X account (@theagroman) in October, according to the charges.
The secret police filed the charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, stating that defendant also sought assistance from members of the military to carry out the alleged coup plot.
The report says that the filing was submitted in court on Tuesday by a DSS lawyer, A. M. Danalami.
Daily Post added that, Onukwume got into trouble when in one of his posts, he reportedly stated: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
Onukwume allegedly stated in another post: “Tinubu has to go and APC has to die for Nigeria to have any semblance of normal life. And if you think your stupid, votes can remove Tinubu. I’m here to tell you that you’re a fool.”
Citing the provisions of Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended), the DSS, stated unequivocally that Onukwume constitute offences punishable by the law.
We gathered that the alleged offender was apprehended at his base in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital in October, following intelligence combing of online activity regarded as a threat to national security.
The matter is expected to come up for hearing at a yet to be named Court of law within this week.
