About 800 Nigerian deportees have been welcomed on arrival from the Republic of Niger at the Jibia-Magama border in Katsina State by security agencies, says the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
The NAN report on Sunday stated that the deportees which included men, women, and children, arrived Nigeria at about 9:30 am in eight buses.
The agency report also stated that the returnees are currently undergoing profiling by security agencies, including officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigeria Customs Service. The report added that the exercise is aimed at ensuring proper documentation and security screening of the affected deportees.
The report stated that after the profiling exercise, the returnees would be moved to Kano State for further undisclosed action.
The report however did not shed light on the reasons behind the deportation of the 800 Nigerians from Nigeria.
The Pinnacle Times can report that Nigeria and Niger Republic maintain a deeply intertwined, strategic relationship based on a 1,500-km shared border, shared cultural/ethnic ties (Hausa/Kanuri), and economic interdependence. While historic ties are strong, relations were strained by the July 2023 Niger coup and subsequent ECOWAS sanctions, which included power supply cuts. Efforts might be underway to restore ties
