The Lagos State budget for the 2026 fiscal year has indicated that a sum of N20billion is set aside for the construction of fencing and drainage channels at the state House of Assembly’s permanent legislative quarters. This is according to a review conducted by the Sahara Reporters

Quoting the online publication, the budget description for the stated construction within the legislative quarters reads “Construction of new fence and drainage channels at the Permanent Legislative Quarters, covering of gutters 20,000,000,000.00 (N20 billion),” with N500 million already spent between January and March 2026, representing expenditure recorded during the first quarter of the year.

Allocation for the above project is said to be among the major infrastructure projects captured in the Lagos State House of Assembly, which exceeded several other capital projects planned by the legislature for the year 2026.

A further review of the budget indicated that the Lagos State House of Assembly plans to spend N16billion on “MDA executed community based Capital Infrastructural Intervention,”  (an amount that is N4billion less than the approved expenditure for the fencing and drainage project at the legislative quarters, according to Sahara Reporters review and as indicated in the budget document).

The Assembly budget equally made provision for N800 million for the “Installation of E-Parliament & Management Software to address the internet facility and some computerization.”

In a separate development, SaharaReporters reports that a review of the approved budget also shows that a sum of N4.2billion is earmarked for the purchase of office furniture and thirty microphones by the Office of the Deputy Governor.

According to the breakdown of the budget reviewed by SaharaReporters, the amount is meant for the “purchase of ten numbers executive table and chairs, forty number visitor chairs, one hundred and twenty (120) officers tables and chairs in DG’s (Deputy Governor’s) office L, newly deployed PS and A&HR & other offices, purchase of thirty microphones for the delegates Con room for ODG”.

Meanwhile, the budget documents/records show that between January and September 2025, N97.5 million had already been spent for the procurement exercise, while an additional N4.247 billion has been approved for the 2026 fiscal year.

According to the publication’s investigation, this is different from the plan by the Lagos State Government intends to spend N467 million on the renovation of the main governor’s residence. In addition, the renovation of the Lagos State House in Abuja is expected to gulp N5 billion, according to the approved budget.

So far, all the allocations formed part of the state’s capital expenditure plans for the 2026 fiscal year as contained in the budget document reviewed by SaharaReporters. The spending proposals highlight significant allocations to government infrastructure, administrative facilities and official residences alongside other projects captured in the state budget for the year.

Some Lagosians have raised concern about the ease with which the budget was approved without much ado, even in the face of other compelling social needs and emergency situation, such as issues of flood control and disaster management in the state.
