Following the approval of new electricity tariff by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, for Band A customers, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC has released data displayed 111 Feeders under its network currently classified under Band ‘A’
By implication, the Band A customers are henceforward expected to pay the new tariff of N225/KwH as approved by NERC for AEDC.
Although, serious controversies have continued to trail the new classification of customers, with critics arguing that the Discos are only out to make money and not to satisfy its customers, amidst frequent grid collapse, lack of power infrastructure enough to sustain the new categorization.
Recall that, the electricity regulatory body, NERC had on Wednesday approved an upward adjustment of electricity tariff for customers under the Band ‘A’ classification.
According to the vice chairman, NERC, Musliu Oseni, the new tariff will result in customers paying N225 kilowatt per hour (KW/h) from the current N66, (translating to N159 increase per hour.)
The NERC boss Oseni informed that only customers on Band A will pay the new tariff, just as customers on Bands B to E will continue to pay the approved tariff as at January 2022.
Some of the reactions by Nigeriansagainst the NERC’s latest move include the fact that it will worsen living condition, and adversely affect the cost of doing business.
Others have reasoned that, the recent increment is coming at a time the citizens are faced with numerous economic challenges occasioned by inflation and high Naira to Dollar exchange rate. They appealed to NERC to review it’s plan and urgently addressing the more pressing issue of frequent national grid collapse, persistent blackouts and lack of transformers to service electricity consumers most of the times
