Fathers With Special Needs Kids Hope for special needs

I have shared many stories of men who do not understand their roles or responsibilities as fathers of special needs children. To balance the equation, there are also men who understand their roles and have carried more than their fair share in special needs parenting. To these men, I celebrate you.

I salute your courage to stand for your special needs child despite the wrong beliefs about special needs children. To men who support their wives – mums with special needs children, thank you.

Thank you for being a shoulder to lean on and a friend to share your thoughts with.

Yes, it is not an easy journey especially when you live in Nigeria but when a woman has a man that she can lean on, that supports her fully, 50% of the weight of special needs parenting is gone.

A woman who has a child with special needs is trying her best to keep sane, just caring for her special needs child. It is a crime for that woman to also have to contend with a problematic husband who doesn’t give her peace of mind.

I remember listening to the voice note of a special needs mum whose husband had beaten her and locked her inside the room with her special needs child. She sounded like someone who didn’t have an education; unknown to me, she had two degrees. That, brethren, is the effect of having to care for a child with severe medical condition and a problematic marriage at the same time. It’s unfair.

For every man out there, that is a blessing to a mum with a special needs child, my heart blesses you. May everything you lay your hands on prosper. May God favour and cause his light to shine upon you. May he turn your tears to testimonies. I don’t take it for granted that it is also your child; I should but I don’t. This is because I have seen that, that is not the norm in our community.

For the exceptional ones, the heroes without capes, I celebrate you. Thank you.
