The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has asked the Electricity Distribution Companies(Discos), in the country to reverse its recent tariff hike for Band A customers category.

In a statement on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero responded this way as the Discos in Nigeria increased electricity tariff to N209.9 per Kilowatt-hour from N206.80 for Band A customers who enjoy 20-24 hours power supply.

Ajaero said that the hike smacked of insincerity and insensitivity by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to the plight of the people.

The NLC President appealed to the discos and the government not kill the people and the economy.

He said: “We do not doubt that this frequent crass display of insincerity and insensitivity will pit the people against the government or vice versa.

“Underscores our argument that the government and entities in the energy sector are not serious about finding an enduring solution to our energy crisis.

“Given the further damage this latest wave of increase will do to our economy, we demand an immediate reversal of the hike.

“It is unjustifiable, unreasonable and malevolent. Government and DisCos should stop killing the people and the economy.”

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, on April 3, 2024, announced a 245 percent increase in electricity tariffs for band A customers.

The increase shut electricity cost go up to N225 per KWh. In May same year, it was slashed to N206 per Kilowatt-hour.
