The Transmission Company of Nigeria ,TCN, has offered explanations about the national grid collapse that took place on Saturday, July 6, as it informed that the fault had since been restored nationwide.

Spokesperson for TCN, Ndidi Mbah, said in a statement on Sunday that the partial disturbance on the grid was caused by an unexpected tripping of three (3) units of a power generating station, which suddenly removed 313MW from the grid.

According to him, the incident had resulted in system instability and a partial collapse of the grid, which in turn led to power outage in certain regions in the country.

Mbah assured that the grid had been restored to full capacity following efforts by its operators on Saturday.

The statement reads: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, hereby states that there was a partial disturbance of the grid at about 15.09 hours yesterday, 6th July 2024.

“The system disturbance, which brings to three, the partial grid disturbances, with one total disturbance this year, is suspected to have been triggered by the unexpected tripping of three (3) units of a power generating station, which suddenly removed 313MW from the grid, causing system instability that led to the loss of bulk supply to a section of the national grid.

“Also, the operators commenced grid restoration efforts immediately after the incident. At about 21.57 hours yesterday, the entire part of the grid that was affected by yesterday’s incident was successfully restored.”

The Pinnacle Times reported that the system collapsed occured at about 3:20 pm on Saturday, leading to a major outage in many parts of the country and, most especially the South- East, which regarded total darkness as a result of the grid collapse.

The situation had left Nigerians wondering about the frequency of the national grid collapse with attendant discomfort to homes and businesses in the country where the cost of other services have reason as a result of current inflation.
