Amid growing concerns around cholera outbreak in Nigeria, a medical professional, Dr Chinonso Egemba, has appealed to Nigerians to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against the potentially fatal disease.

Cholera, a bacterial infection causing severe diarrhea and dehydration, typically spreads through contaminated water or food.

Commenting on the recent outbreak in the country, the medical doctor highlighted the severity of the outbreak, warning Nigerians to be cautious about their food and water consumption.

“Nigerians should be careful of what they eat and where they eat right now because there is currently an outbreak of cholera in the country, which is claiming lives.

As of now, many people have lost their lives, and many others are hospitalized,” he stated, explaining that cholera is an abnormal type of diarrhea. “Once it enters the body it causes the body to secrete water excessively, leading to severe dehydration, kidney failure, or even death, if not managed properly. The stool of a cholera patient resembles rice water, and the volume of water loss can be massive.

“Symptoms include vomiting and simultaneous diarrhea i.e vomiting and stooling at the same time, which can result in dehydration within an hour, causing irritability. Some can even experience muscle cramps, and even shock,” he added.

To prevent cholera, the medical expert advised by stating precautions to be taken: “Be cautious about what and where you eat. Ensure that your drinking water is safe, treated, bottled, or certified.

“Avoid raw food and ensure the water used in food preparation is safe. Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water.

“Wash hands with soap under running water, especially after using the toilet. Keep toilets and surrounding areas clean.

“Consume warm food, avoid cold and undercooked food, especially those sold on the street and above all, get vaccinated against cholera,” Egemba advised.

As Nigeria battles cholera outbreak, adherence to preventive guidelines has been established as crucial in safeguarding public health.
