After persistent calls in certain quarters for the Nigeria’s President to address the nation in the face of the fallouts of the national protests occasioned by economic hardship, President Bola Tinubu is set to speak to the myriad of challenges bedeviling the nation on Sunday morning ( August 4, 2024, at 7:00 am) in a nationwide broadcast.
This was disclosed by the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement.
Ngelale said: “Television, radio, and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to plug into the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the broadcast.
“The broadcast will be repeated on the network services of the NTA and the FRCN at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm on the same day.”
Chief among the stringent calls for the president to address the nation were that of the President’s opponents in the last election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who at different times appealed for such an address with a view to placating the protesting youths who poured into the streets to express their grievances through the ongoing nationwide protests about the state of the nation’s economy, leading to high cost of commodity items, beyond the rich of the common man.
In the last few months Nigerians across different divides and social strata face one of the country’s worst inflation rates and economic difficulties fuelled by removal of petrol subsidy at the inception of the Tinubu-led government in May 29, 2023 as well as the unification of foreign exchange windows.
