Nigeria-born British boxer Anthony Joshua is staying back temporarily at his native country as he recovers from injuries sustained during a fatal crash.

Recall that a Lexus jeep carrying the former heavyweight champion and two of his close friends rammed into a stationary truck on Monday December 29, 2025 on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, linking Ogun state to Lagos.

AJ, as Anthony Joshua is popularly referred to lost the two associates, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, who were traveling with him in the same vehicle.

 

Following his release from a Lagos hospital on Wednesday afternoon, Joshua paid his respects to his deceased friends at the mortuary.

 

“As reported, Anthony was released from hospital last night and will remain in Nigeria over the coming days,” his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, told The Associated Press on Thursday.

 

As a child, AJ who once attended a boarding school in Nigeria, his ancestral home.

 

Cause of vehicle accident:

Preliminary investigations by government authorities indicate that the Lexus SUV Joshua was a passenger in was speeding and experienced a tire burst or lost control while overtaking, causing it to crash into a stationary truck parked on the side of the road.
