In recognition of his significant contributions to the stability of the country, Federal Executive Council, FEC yesterday renamed University of Abuja after the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris spoke during the 14th meeting of FEC, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
While addressing the state house correspondents shortly after the last FEC meeting of the year 2024, Idris stated the renaming of UniAbuja is to the elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon (retd) who turned 90th years recently.
The minister informed that the resolution “will go through the National Assembly, but FEC has taken that decision.” According to him, this will pave the way for formal approval and ensure that the change is officially recognised.
General Gowon became the youngest Nigerian military Head of State at 31 and led from 1966 to 1975 and led the Nigerian civil war (1967–1970), marked by the secession plan in the South Easter region of the country.
And one of his most outstanding contributions was the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to integrate and promote the unity of the country after the war.
The renamed UniAbuja was established in 1988. It was designed as a dual-mode institution, offering both conventional and distance learning programmes to cater to student population at different levels.
