In a significant boost for the state’s healthcare sector, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the immediate payment of eight months’ salary arrears owed to newly recruited health workers under the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board.
This development comes as a huge relief just two months after the affected workers—part of the 1,000 personnel deployed across the state’s 23 Local Government Areas—raised concerns over their unpaid entitlements.
Announcing the governor’s directive, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Justina Jumbo, stated that the accumulated arrears will be paid alongside the October salaries. She made the disclosure during the official launch of the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) System at the Kelson Harrison Hospital in Diobu, Port Harcourt.
Represented by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, Mrs. Jumbo commended Governor Fubara for his prompt intervention, describing it as a demonstration of his commitment to improving the welfare of health workers and strengthening service delivery in the state.
Also speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Bright Ogbonda, said the rollout of the EMR System in four pilot hospitals marks a major leap toward digitalizing patient records and ensuring more efficient, transparent, and quality healthcare delivery across Rivers State.
