Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to completing the 50.15-kilometre Port Harcourt Ring Road project, describing it as a transformative infrastructure that will redefine urban mobility across the state capital and its environs.
Fubara made the pledge on Monday, during an inspection of the Eneka section of the project in company with senior officials of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the construction firm handling the contract.
The governor said his visit followed recent engagements with the management of Julius Berger, which had assured the state government of a full return to site after earlier disruptions occasioned by funding constraints.
“We are here this afternoon to confirm the commitment that Julius Berger gave to us,” Fubara told journalists after the inspection. He added that, “You are aware that these projects were — I wouldn’t say abandoned — but somehow, for lack of funds, the contractors withdrew from the sites.”
He further assured residents that his administration remained resolute in ensuring the completion of all ongoing projects, stating that:
“Let me make this promise to our good people of Rivers State — this project that we started, by the special grace of God, we are going to complete.”
Flagged off on July 17, 2023, the Port Harcourt Ring Road is one of Governor Fubara’s flagship projects. Spanning 50.15 kilometres, it traverses five local government areas — Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, Ikwerre, Etche, and Eleme — and includes six flyovers and a major river-crossing bridge.
When completed, the project is expected to ease the perennial traffic congestion within the Port Harcourt metropolis, open up new development corridors, and enhance socioeconomic activities across the state.
Fubara’s visit to the Eneka section, analysts observed, underscores his administration’s determination to sustain momentum on key infrastructural projects despite fiscal challenges, reflecting his broader vision of a more connected and economically vibrant Rivers State.
