The Federal Government, through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, has organized a National Memorial Church Service in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, at the National Christian Centre, Abuja on Sunday, 20 July, 2025.

The SGF, George Akume, represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the event which added to the honours done the departed former leader.

The SGF commended late Muhammadu Buhari’s  legacy of discipline, reform, patriotism during a solemn National Memorial Church Service in Abuja.

Part of the statement from the Director of Information and Public Relation in the Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, quoted Akume as saying that :

“Though not perfect, he fought a good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. His legacy in national security, social protection, and institutional reforms – including the Petroleum Industry Act – will remain part of Nigeria’s development history.”

Akume also seized the occasion to appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the approval he granted for  renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in posthumous recognition of the former President’s contributions to national development.

The SGF noted that, “This gesture is not merely symbolic. It is about inspiring future generations to lead with courage and sacrifice, as President Buhari did.”

Those in attendance include representative of the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate Majority Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, members of the National Assembly, ministers, top government officials, former Secretaries to the Government of the Federation, retired Permanent Secretaries, members of the Armed Forces and other dignitaries.

Buhari, a former civilian President (2015 to 2023), had also served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985

Late Muhammadu Buhari’s dispensation, civilian and military were dotted by austerity measures, security challenges, while he will equally be remembered for his highly conservative leadership style and  anti-corruption posture ( punctured by the recklessness of some of his appointees)  and his manner of making political appointments, largely criticized as favourable mainly to his Fulani tribesmen)
