Introduction: This is ASK THE BOSS, Edition No. 11. You ask the questions privately, we do the answering publicly. This has been going on since the year of our Lord, 2012. That is to say, ASK THE BOSS is 12 years old and counting.

The feedback received has given us double assurance that this series is achieving set goals and meeting set targets. We have no choice but to continue with this consensus building mechanism. Whatever question you have about life, we are here to help you. Reach us today, pleading anonymity if you need it.

2.0 Today, it is someone we consider a blast from our past who wins bragging rights. All hail Mr. Courage Mbon, who bears the rather taunting sobriquet, Mr. Phenomenal. Imagine that. Now, here he comes, Mr. Phenomenal:

3.0 ‘Hello, The Boss. Here’s my question: I understand it’s important to watch what we think. But I also understand that our thought process is immensely influenced by our perception. In other words, what we see or hear influences our thoughts.

4.0 ‘Sir, we live in a world where we are constantly plagued by things we don’t want to see or hear. How then do we sift what we take in? How can we train our mind to accept only what we want? Many thanks for having me.’

5.0 MY TAKE: Our own Mr. Phenomenal, how nice of you to honour the agreement during our ritualistic Leadership Clinic at BUSH HOUSE NIGERIA. When you first concocted this question, I had said that this would make a good material for ASK THE BOSS. Many thanks for accepting to share it here. As I answered then, I will use a simple analogy to drive home the point now.

6.0 Take a look at the workings of the door. It is big, while the space it opens to is bigger. Yet, you need a tiny element, called key, to deny or gain access. Even the owner of the room needs the key to placate the door to play ball before they can be let in -into their very own space.

7.0 In the human system, the ears, tongue, nose, eyes and skin are organs that enable hearing, tasting, smelling, seeing and feeling (in that order). Amazingly, these five senses are directed anyhow by one small central remote control called brain. Like the key, the brain can lock out any unwanted action. This means that if a human being trains themselves properly, they can turn their brain to a knob with which to switch on or off any or all of the senses.

8.0 Is that not what the communication model, SEPAR, preaches? My dear Mr. Phenomenal, by simply applying the SELECTIVE EXPOSURE PERCEPTION ATTENTION & RETENTION approach, you can use your brain to shut down your nose in a room messed up by fart. That way, you neither smell nor inhale what others are cursing for. See, if you can lock up your nose, you can also do the same to your eyes, ears and indeed all other sense organs.

9.0 Coming back to your question, you can choose what you want to hear. You can choose what you want to see. And, yes, you can choose even what you want to store up. Just use your brain to shut down the organ concerned.

10.0 If you are in a crowd and the discussion is bunkum, and you want out, there’s only a short to-do list you must follow. First things first, activate your brain power. Next, order for it to disconnect from your ears, immediately. Remember: to train your mind to accept only what you want, your brain is key.

11.0 Please use it, 24/7. Your body and its entire set-up belong to you. They should be at your beck and call, 25 hours daily. I mean, you are finished if your own body architecture refuses to yield to you.
Conclusion: That’s a huge answer; even if I say so myself. Keep inboxing me your questions on Life Experiences. Let’s share perspectives. It might help someone.

God bless Nigeria!
