Amidst widespread reports that the 2025 AFCON has been postponed, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has debunked the rumours.
Earlier, certain viral reports had speculated that due to the new version of the FIFA Club World Cup which will be held from June 15 to July 13, 2025, in the United States, AFCON will now be in January 2026.
Debunking the news about the postponement, CAF on their official X handle ( formerly Twitter) on Wednesday stated that: “Reports on AFCON 2025 are untrue. The CAF Executive Committee will meet, deliberate and decide on the AFCON 2025 dates. CAF will thereafter issue an official statement on the matter.”
But CAF had yet to mention when the executive committee will meet just as the 2025 tournament is yet to have a date.
The football body, CAF, has equally drawn criticisms for its inability to fix dates for the 2024 women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals, also in Morocco. This is apart from the uncertainty clouding the second edition of the African Football League, the continent’s new super league that was launched in 2023.
A Punch report stated that eight selected clubs played for record prize money in a knockout competition crammed into two months.
In the report, CAF President, Patrice Motsepe had promised the next edition would be made up of 24 teams but CAF on Tuesday announced that next season’s African Champions League and Confederation Cup group stages would be played from October to December – the dates taken up by the African Football League last year.
