Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu and eight lawmakers have introduced a bill to establish the Bola Tinubu University of Nigerian Languages, which would focus on promoting and preserving Nigerian languages and cultures.
The university, which is to be located in Aba, Abia state, aims to promote the study and use of Nigerian languages and culture for national development.
The university aims to offer diplomas, undergraduate, and postgraduate degrees, providing opportunities for all individuals to gain a higher education in these fields.
The bill seeks to create an institution that not only emphasizes language education but also serves as a center for research, innovation, and the development of professional skills tied to Nigerian languages and their cultural significance.
Section 14(2) of the bill states that the president will be the “visitor” of the university.
“The Visitor shall as often as the circumstances may require, not being less than once every five years, conduct a visitation of the University or direct that such a visitation be conducted by such person or persons as the Visitor may deem fit and in respect of any of the affairs of the University,” the bill states.
This proposal follows a growing trend in establishing educational institutions named after national leaders, contributing to the expansion of higher education options across the country, The Pinnacle Times gathered
