The Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) has condemned the donation of N200 million to the Omega Power Ministry, OPM, during its 18th anniversary on Sunday 3 November, 2024 by the Rivers State governor Sir. Siminialayi Fubara.
DHRD, a non-governmental body observed that gifting such a huge amount of scarce state and public funds was not justifiable.
In a statement made available to the media, Chairman of the group, Clifford Christopher Solomon, argued that there was no need for the governor to gift such money at a time when the state is undergoing crisis that bothers on control of state ‘structure.’
The group’s chairman stated that, “as we all know, Rivers State is currently in financial “Epilepsy” for the governor to venture into such religious give-away to an already very established church or churches as the case may be.
“The governor who should at this challenging times of our state be more prudent with resources is embarking on ‘Owambe’ parties and donations.
“Rivers State as we know is begging for responsible and responsive governance.”
DHRD also drew the attention of the governor to the rising insecurity, dearth of infrastructure, dilapidated state of public schools with no teachers and the increasing refuse and waste crisis that defaced Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State, which the group condemned saying that Port Harcourt has turned to garbage city.
It therefore urged the governor to stop his unnecessary donations of the state scarce resources, while imploring him not to emulate the footsteps of his predecessor, Barr. Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike, in that regard.
