Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, have arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, the declared wanted son of the former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina.
He has been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Prior to this time, the anti-graft agency had declared the fugitive wanted after he took cover since 2020, until the secret service uncovered his hideout in Karsana, in a surbub of the FCT, Abuja.
According to a security source, Maina’s son was picked up following intelligence report that he secretly returned to the country.
Faisal underwent trial for a three-count charge bordering on money laundering and conspiracy before he breached his bail conditions and secretly left the country.
Notwithstanding his secret escape, he trial continued, leading to his final convinction and sentence to 14 years’ imprisonment by Justice Okon Abang in 2021.
The presiding judge had ordered that Faisal be apprehended wherever he was found in the country and remanded in a correctional centre to serve his sentence.
The court also ordered that, if found outside the country, the Federal Government should take lawful steps to secure his repatriation to serve his prison term.
A security source who spoke on the DSS action said the handover of Maina’s son to the EFCC would help the enforcement of the Court’s judgment and ensure that accused serves his sentence in accordance with the provisions of the law.
Another security analyst, who preferred to be anonymous said development is a reminder that no one is above the law and a demonstration of good synergy between two sister security agencies.
