I’m delighted to present the New Year’s series of another two-part poem, following the Christmas series, also a two-part poem. This two-part poem specifically explores the New Year’s aspects of yuletide. The first installment of this series, “Finale of the Year’s Breaths”, invites you the reader to reflect on the passage of time and the significance of the year’s conclusion, as the world prepares to bid farewell to the old and usher in the new.

“Finale of the Year’s Breaths” masterfully captures the essence of New Year’s Eve, with all its festivities, traditions, and introspections. It highlights the human experiences that define this moment, from the excitement of celebrations to the bittersweet nature of reflections, where the “tears of time” leave an indelible mark. This poem is a personal and reflective one, drawn from my own observations of the activities and atmosphere that characterise the days leading up to the New Year. Through these words, I aim to convey the entanglements and emotions that accompany this significant turning point in human lives.

As I share this poem with you, I encourage you to immerse yourself in its thoughtful and evocative language. I invite you to reflect on the poem’s themes and share your thoughts. What does New Year’s Eve mean to you? What traditions, hopes, and aspirations do you associate with this “special” night?

Join me as we embark on this contemplative journey, and let the “Finale of the Year’s Breaths” inspire you to ponder the complexities and joys of time’s passage.

“Finale of the Year’s Breaths”

As the fragrance of Christmas winds down,
The New Year breeze begins blowing in town
Though the father of Christmas still wearing his crown
And with smiles wiping children’s frown.

Tick, tick tick; the hands of clock crawl
The dawn of a “New Year” crows
Growing resoundingly like a clarion call
Harkening to its call as the old one goes,
Hanging up there in the air
Awaiting to fully appear.

Heartbeats counting, as eyes stir
Stirring at the rising dawn drawing near.
Were we to rewind the hands of time,
Rewound to the earliness of this concluding calendar,
Some souls returned and returning to the dust
Some spent and spending in and behind bars

For little or not a crime;
And some hearts toyed with, some tossed, some lost.

From the dawn of the eve to its dusk
Belts being fastened; buckles being tightened
As souls prepare to embark on a journey,
Journeying to a church or journeying to a mosque.
As knees lower to the ground
Heads too are bowed
Faces covered to the ground;
Strongly becoming the “New Year” sound
The atmosphere pierced with passionate voices praying aloud.

Prayers prayed are thanks being given
As they cry: “Mercy upon us oh heaven;
Mercy for the areas weve fallen;”
Thanksgiving for blessings uncounted, unheard, ones unspoken
Forgiveness for wrong words which were spoken
Guidance for paths to be taken
So thoughts are understood, and decisions not mistaken;
Vows are made to tirn a New leave
As goals are set to be achieved
By the ones who would work and believe.

Emotions high, hearts racing
The dawn of the New Year smells its breaking;
The flickering skies of fireworks lit night,
A wondrous delight to the eyes,
A thunderous delight to the ears
Fading out the old Year for the New to take flight.

The hand of time kisses eleven fifty-nine,
Mixed emotions await the 12o’clock surprise
In collective countdown of final seconds with wide eyes;
The clock strikes twelve with a thunderous cheer
A thunderous chere of “Happy New Year!”

As laughter, hugs , and tears blend,
Having gone past a tensed uncertain end
Happy hearts, joyful crowd as the scarred amend
And so, another year begins, with hopes anew
A chance to redeem selves, and see dreams come true.
