A renewed commitment to uplifting the Nigerian education sector was on full display as Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Honourable Minister of Education, inaugurated the Governing Councils for Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.

The ceremony, held in the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, was attended by dignitaries, education stakeholders, and newly appointed council members.

In his keynote address, Prof. Mamman lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for prioritizing education as a cornerstone for national development. He emphasized the administration’s vision, encapsulated in the “Education for Renewed Hope” initiative, which seeks to make higher education accessible to all Nigerians irrespective of socio-economic status.

The Minister unveiled a strategic roadmap aimed at overhauling the education sector. Key initiatives include the Data Repository, Out-of-School Children Education, Teachers Training and Development, and Skills Development and Digitalization (DOTS). These programmes, he said, are critical in addressing the pressing challenges in the sector, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and high dropout rates.

“Accurate data is essential for informed decision-making and resource allocation,” Prof. Mamman stated, highlighting the importance of the DOTS initiative in transforming the education landscape through technology and skills-based learning.

Acknowledging the myriad challenges facing Nigerian tertiary institutions, such as insufficient infrastructure, unstable academic calendars, and examination malpractices, Prof. Mamman called on the new Governing Councils to drive strategic oversight and ensure transparent and responsible financial management.

“Your role is critical in setting the strategic direction and overseeing the efficient management of our tertiary institutions,” the Minister emphasized, urging the councils to explore diverse funding sources, including partnerships with the private sector and international organizations.

Collaboration and Transformation

Prof. Mamman underscored the importance of collaboration, noting that the Federal Government alone cannot meet the sector’s enormous needs. He called on the council members to leverage their expertise and experience to address these challenges and drive meaningful change.

“With determination and a shared vision, we can overcome these challenges and achieve a remarkable transformation in our education sector,” he stated.

The ceremony concluded with the formal inauguration of the Governing Councils. Prof. Mamman expressed confidence in the new appointees’ ability to steer the institutions towards greater heights, ensuring they fulfill their mandate of providing quality education, research, and community service.

“I congratulate you all on your appointments and wish you a successful tenure. Your contributions are vital for the future of our children and the development of our nation,” Prof. Mamman concluded.

With the inauguration of the new Governing Councils, there is renewed hope and anticipation for significant advancements in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. The concerted efforts of the government, stakeholders, and the newly appointed council members are expected to drive substantial improvements, making quality education accessible to all.
