In what appears to be a major financial incentive, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have been promised $10,000 (₦14m) for every goal scored against Mozambique in the knockout fixture of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, Round of 16 match.

The monetary motivation is coming from a Nigerian businessman who is also a team partner and applies  knockout fixture at the Fez Stadium in Morocco on Monday.

It would be recalled that similar gesture had been extended earlier to the team by same personality covering  $5,000 per goal during the group stage, a bonus that has now been doubled for the knockout phase.

The gesture was made known by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, while addressing journalists on Sunday in Rabat.

He revealed the incentive structure put in place to motivate the Super Eagles to perform optimally against their opponents.

“We have fully mobilized the Super Eagles to succeed in this tournament.”

“On the part of the Federal Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the AFCON Intervention Fund on November 14. In addition, our partners and sponsors paid $5,000 per goal in the group stage and have now committed $10,000 per goal for the Round of 16. The incentives will continue to improve as the tournament progresses,” Dikko said.

Interestingly, the Mozambique Mambas too have received a promise of financial reward from their President, Daniel Francisco Chapo, who announced an extraordinary bonus of $7,000 about N11.3m if the Mozambique edge out the Super Eagles.
