The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has joined the international community in commemorating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, paying tribute to peacekeepers across the world for their courage, professionalism, sacrifice, and commitment to the promotion of global peace and security.
Marking the commemoration on Wednesday, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, honoured the memory of peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving under the United Nations flag.
He noted that their sacrifices will continue to inspire efforts toward building a safer and more peaceful world.
The IGP highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding contributions to international peace support operations.
He acknowledged that officers of the Nigeria Police Force have served with distinction in numerous United Nations, African Union, and regional peacekeeping missions. He stated that Nigerian Police peacekeepers have continued to demonstrate professionalism, expertise, and dedication in conflict-affected communities across the globe, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a responsible contributor to international peace and security.
Speaking on the theme of the 2026 commemoration, “Invest in Peace,” IGP Disu emphasized the need for sustained investment in peacebuilding, capacity development, strong institutions, technology, and international cooperation.
Disu noted that contemporary security threats, including terrorism, transnational organized crime, cyber-enabled offences, communal conflicts, and violent extremism, require innovative and collaborative approaches to peace and security management.
The IGP further stressed the importance of equipping peacekeepers with the requisite skills, training, technology, and operational resources necessary to effectively address emerging security challenges. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of female peacekeepers and called for greater participation and leadership opportunities for women in peace operations.
While appreciating the sacrifices made by peacekeepers and their families, the Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening its peacekeeping capacity and supporting initiatives that promote international peace, security, and stability.
The Nigeria Police Force used the opportunity to restate ots commitment to advancing professionalism, capacity development, and global partnerships in support of peacekeeping operations and sustainable peace worldwide.
