The Nigeria Police Force has taken firm and decisive action sequel to the circulation of a video on social media showing a police officer in camouflage with conduct it condemns as grossly inconsistent with the standards of the Force.
A release by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon explained that upon citing the viral footage, the Ekiti State Police Command immediately identified the errant officer as a Sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters.
“He has since been taken into custody to face disciplinary action,” the statement by the Force headquarters said.
DCP Okon also informed that the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has directed a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the officer.
It explained further that, “This assessment is a mandatory prerequisite to the formal disciplinary process, ensuring that the Force addresses both the conduct violation and any underlying health concerns in a thorough and responsible manner,” adding that,”The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu psc(+), NPM, unequivocally condemns the conduct displayed in the video as a gross deviation from the discipline, professionalism, and decorum required of every member of the Nigeria Police Force.”
The police authorities restated its commitment that the Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward substance abuse and any behavior that undermines the integrity of the uniform or erodes public trust in the institution.
Recall that the viral clip showed the officer in camouflage, clinging to a wooden bench and blabbing as though drunken or under substance abuse, an action which led to public outcry against an office in uniform.
As the public awaits the outcome of the investigation into the conduct of the officer in question, it is instructive that officers in uniform represent image and discipline as they enforce the law.
