President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to visit Nasarawa State to commission a new 6,000-metric-ton lithium processing plant built by Chinese investors, Governor Abdullahi Sule has informed.

Gov. Sule who spoke to State House correspondents revealed this after closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

The lithium plant established in Nasarawa Local Government Area, is the second lithium plant constructed in the state within the last year and is twice the size of the previous 3,000MT capacity project launched in 2023, according to the PUNCH.

Although the governor did not give a hint of specific day for the commissioning, stated that President Tinubu’s visit will follow his return from France after a two-week stay scheduled to begin later this week.

“They said they were going to build a bigger one…they have just concluded building it, and it is ready for commissioning,” stated the Nasarawa State governor, adding that President had promised that on his return from his short vacation, he will be visiting Nasarawa to commission the project.

Nasarawa, located in the north-central Nigeria boasts of a thriving lithium value chain.

In addition, the Nasarawa Lithium processing plant, according to governor Sule, is one of several such projects supported by China-based companies following a surge in exploration activity and preliminary assessments confirming commercial-grade deposits in the area.

Lithium is a key component in electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems, has continued to generate increasing interest from foreign investors in the race of  global energy transition.
