Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike has said that discussions will continue with private partners, that would see to it that operators of buses and taxi services in the FCT are registered and assigned operational routes for security reasons.
By the same token, the FCT minister informed that the Federal Capital Territory Administration will commence soon the construction of bus terminals that would service the different routes in the in the nation’s capital. Wike made the disclosure when the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt, paid a courtesy visit to the FCT Administration on Wednesday.
The minister explained that the project, currently at its procurement stage would commence fully after the completion of the procurement process. He said: “We are also trying to build terminals for buses and taxis. For example, we will not have public taxis on the road.
“You must go to a particular terminal where passengers will be and where the drivers are identified.
“These are efforts we are putting in place to see that not only is it decent, but in terms of fighting insecurity and we believe by the grace of God, when we have the approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement, we believe in the next one month, construction ought to have started.”
On the way forward on movement of cattle in the city centre also sought by the ambassador, Wike responded that the issue was a sensitive one, requiring more consultation with the stakeholders, especially amongst the various security agencies, the herders, and the FCT Administration.
He stressed the need to educate the herders more on the need to keep the cattle away from grazing in the city center.
