President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians of the resolve of his administration to subdue the nation’s security challenges by sufficiently deploying and arming the proposed state police and forest guards to actualize the plan.
The President made the disclosure during the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting on Friday at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
He revealed that government will establish forest rangers, who will be equipped with necessary arms to, in order to put an end to terrorism and banditry confronting many parts of the country.
“We are going for state police. We will do forest rangers. We will arm them. We will defeat those terrorists and bandits, we must do that, ” President Tinubu vowed.
The resolve to establish state police follows the perennial terrorist activities resulting in the killings of innocent and armless nigerians across the country.
But the proposed creation of state police has been a serious subject of debate, just as political oppositions have continued to argue that the Initiative could be an avenue for the government in power , both at the center and the sub-regional to use same for political advantage against other interests.
Those in favour of the idea have also argued that it could be a real solution to the myriad of security challenges confronting the country, as it will afford state government to evolve strategies to address their peculiar security situation, thereby granting Independence to the states to improve its security architecture.
