This was disclosed furing a recent meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships, and Higher Education Financing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, NELFUND’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Akintunde Sawyerr, outlined the Fund’s ambitious goal to disburse N90 billion in tuition fees and stipends.
Sawyerr emphasized the inclusive nature of the scheme, highlighting that it is designed to ensure every Nigerian, regardless of location or background, has access to quality education. He noted the proactive efforts made to reach underrepresented communities, particularly in the South East, which have led to a significant increase in applications.
“With applications averaging over 1,000 per day, we are committed to addressing the barriers faced by students, including those living with disabilities and girls who are often denied educational opportunities,” Sawyerr stated. He added that providing access to education for Nigeria’s youth is crucial for the nation’s future stability and growth, especially given that 70% of the population is under the age of 35.
Sawyerr described NELFUND as an institution aimed at delivering long-term solutions to the common man during challenging economic times, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “This initiative is not just a temporary relief measure; it’s about fostering a more stable and prosperous future for Nigeria,” he said.
The committee’s chairman, Gboyega Isiaka, acknowledged the critical role of NELFUND in shaping a brighter future for Nigerian youth.
