That the Super Eagles moved a step closer to 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification after edging Lesotho 2-1 on Friday in a decisive match is no longer news, what’s news and would interest fans home and abroad now is
Let’s weigh the possibilities by considering Benin Republic edge and points in their own match, meaning the Super Eagles remain behind on points and goal difference in Group C.
With only one match remaining in the group, the Nigeria’s fate is not entirely secured in the World Cup.
The Eagles on 14 points and Benin now leading the group with 17 points, means the Eagles still have several pathways to automatic qualification:
The first option is to win the final match against Benin Republic. A compulsory win is essential for the team to stay in competition.
Another option or pathway is for Benin Republic side and South Africa to drop points in their last fixtures.
The Eagles must score more goals, which is another option- Nigeria trail Benin and South Africa, so scoring more goals could be decisive if teams finish level on points.
Finally, a strong performance in the last round could see Nigeria overtake the leaders, Benin Republic and secure the top spot.
Good thing the Eagles defeated Lesotho already, which is a harsh blow. That Nigeria rested Lesotho hopes effectively put an end to their qualifying from the group.
With the Eagles shaky nine nine points from five matches, they require an almost impossible combination of results or possibilities to stay in contention.
