The World Humanitarian Day is an international day dedicated to salute humanitarian personnel and those who have paid the supreme price working for humanitarian benefits.
It was designated by the United Nation’s General Assembly as part of a Swedish-sponsored GA Resolution A/63/L.49 on Strengthening of the Coordination of Emergency Assistance of the United Nations, and is celebrated 19 August annually.
The calendar year also marks the day on which the former Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his colleagues were killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.
