As the New Year begins, many people around the world set out with grand plans to right the wrongs of previous years and achieve success. But the pressing question remains: How far can we really go on this journey of 365 days?

Giving the year beautiful names, making declarations, attending watch-night services, and offering heartfelt prayers are commendable. Yet, these alone are not the keys to turning dreams into reality. Too often, people start the year filled with enthusiasm, only to find themselves no better—or even worse—by its end.So, why does this happen? If God is not partial and answers prayers, why do many fail to see the results they desire? The answer lies in understanding and applying the keys to making the year count.

Keys to Making the Year Count
In one of His transformative teachings, Jesus offered timeless wisdom that provides a roadmap for anyone who desires a fulfilling year. Luke 14:28 highlights principles every individual must embrace:
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”
Let us break down these keys:

  1. Have a Vision
“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18)
Every journey begins with a destination in mind. Similarly, the journey of 365 days requires a clear vision. What do you want to achieve by the end of the year?
Men who changed the world and left lasting legacies were driven by vision. Do not waste this year wandering aimlessly. Write down your goals and revisit them regularly.
“And the Lord answered me and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” (Habakkuk 2:2)
A vision is not a wish. It is a concrete, well-defined target. Without it, you’ll receive nothing from above.
  2. Develop a Plan
A vision without a plan is merely a dream. The Bible underscores the importance of intentional planning:
“Sitteth not down first.” (Luke 14:28)
Take time to think, strategize, and craft a roadmap for achieving your goals. God honors preparation and effort, not wishful thinking.
  3. Count the Cost
Every vision comes with a price. Whether it’s time, resources, effort, or sacrifices, achieving great results requires commitment. Don’t let the cost scare you away. Instead, embrace it as part of the process.
    Ask yourself:
What will it cost me to achieve this goal?
How can I align my efforts with God’s purpose for my life?
Can I break this goal into smaller, achievable milestones?
God has equipped you with creative power. Whatever you conceive in your heart is within your capacity to achieve.
  4. Take Action
A vision and a plan are meaningless without action. One of humanity’s greatest pitfalls is knowing much but doing little.
Faith and prayers without action lead nowhere. If you refuse to work toward your goals, even the longest fasts and most fervent prayers will yield nothing. The Bible makes this clear:
“But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:20)
“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” (Proverbs 22:29)
Push yourself to the finish line. Work with diligence and determination to bring your vision to life.

As you step into this New Year, embrace a purpose-driven mindset. Combine your vision, plans, and actions with faith and trust in God. The Bible promises:
“In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success.” (Proverbs 3:6, LB)
Remember, the principles outlined by Jesus are not mere suggestions; they are transformative keys that have propelled countless individuals to success.
“Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10, NIV)

The New Year is like a blank chapter waiting to be written. How will you fill its pages? As Melody Beattie wisely said:
“The New Year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.”
Make this year different. Set your vision, plan diligently, count the cost, and take bold actions. When you align your efforts with God’s purpose and principles, the year will not only count but also overflow with testimonies and fulfillment.
