The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari are expected to be laid to rest Tuesday in his hometown in Daura, in keeping with Islamic tradition, even as President Bola Tinubu and other Nigeria’s past heads of state are also expected to converge on Kastina State as a mark of last respect for the departed leader.
The Pinnacle Times had reported that Buhari, the immediate past president and a former military head of state died on Sunday, July 13 at a London clinic, after battling an undisclosed illness.
Earlier, an unconfirmed official report had stated that the former President’s remains would arrive the country early on Monday and will be flown to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, for burial.
The Punch newspaper had quoted an official of the presidency as saying that, “The burial is tomorrow (Monday). They’re bringing his corpse over the night. They’ll go straight to Daura. So, they’ll bury him tomorrow (Monday).
But, before long, the governor of Kastina State had clear the air on the exact day of the interment of former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it will take place in Tuesday by 2:pm in the afternoon.
The change in date may have been caused by the need to properly put arrangements in place to accord the departed the honour of state burial, as the presidency would later reveal.
As part of what to be expected, a source had said that some West African leaders especially are expected to grace the burial of the late Muhammadu Buhari
On the efforts deployed by the presidency, The Pinnacle Times gathered that President Tinubu had announced former President Buhari’s passing, and as a mark of honour ordered VP Shettima to the Uk to accompany the corpse back home.
“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences,” a statement signed by his Special Adviser in Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday.
Consequently, Tinubu ordered flags at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
Similarly, the President also summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President.
Similarly , Tinubu also confirmed that Buhari would be accorded full state Honours.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu wrote.
Muhammadu Buhari, 82 , had travelled to London in June for follow-up care related to an undisclosed health condition.
More details are expected as the burial arrangements continue to unfold.
