…Says Trump trying to break us

With Additional Reports

Canada’s Liberal Party has secured victory in a fourth straight election, thereby giving Mark Carney a mandate to govern with only a narrow margin of victory.

The  Prime Minister Carney’s party led with 168 seats, ahead of the rival Conservatives but short of the 172 required for a majority. The Liberals were helped to victory by holding crucial ground in the country’s two biggest cities, while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s bad night got worse as he was projected to lose his own seat.

World leaders greet Carney

Meanwhile, world leaders have continued to congratulate Mark Carney following his declaration of victory in Canada’s federal election.

President of Ukraine, has added his voice to those congratulating Carney and the Liberals.

Zelenskyy wrote on social media: “Ukraine deeply values our close ties with Canada and the unwavering support of the Canadian people,”

Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Canada has been one of the most vocal supporters of Ukraine.

“We are sincerely grateful for Canada’s principled leadership in supporting Ukraine – from military, financial, and humanitarian assistance to imposing sanctions against Russia,” Zelenskyy said.

Carney did not spare a moment in pledging to fight against US President Donald Trump’s trade war and threats of annexation.

Trump had boasted of capable of making Canada the 51st state under the United States after his re-election into the White House.

But there is uncertainty that, because while Carney’s Liberal Party is projected to have won the election, it’s not yet clear if he will be able to form a majority government, Al-Jazeera report has analysed.

Election body says more than two-thirds of Registered Voters cast Ballots:

According to Elections Canada, 67.15 percent of registered voters – equivalent to 19,155,470 individuals – cast ballots in the election.

The total number of registered voters stood at 28,525,638.

This figure does not account for voters who registered on election day, the election body added.

In the last federal election in 2021, the voter turnout stood at 62.6 percent.

PM Carney’s Key Election pledges during Campaign Period:

  • Carney promised every dollar the government collects from counter-tariffs on US goods will go towards Canadian workers who are adversely affected by the trade war.
  • He also said he plans to keep dental care in place.
  • The Liberal Party leader pledged to offer a middle-class tax cut.
  • He said he would return immigration to sustainable levels.
  • And he promised to increase funding to CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster.

And what Carney’s win means for Europe

Katerina Sviderska and Leandre Benoit, writing in The Conversation, say “Carney’s centrist and pro-EU attitude provides stability and relief” for the Europeans at a time of “transatlantic unpredictability”.

The two sides share deep economic and strategic ties, in sectors ranging from trade, climate and defence, they wrote.

And Canada, under Carney, is likely to strengthen those ties, including consolidating the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which has increased trade between the two sides by 65 percent.

Carney also shares the EU view that investment in new technologies is the path forward on tackling climate change, they wrote.

On security, Canada has also been among the most “reliable supporters of Ukraine” since the Russian invasion, while Carney has also pledged to reach NATO’s benchmark of spending 2 percent of GDP on defence, the analysts noted.

“Under Carney’s leadership, Canada is likely to pursue a pragmatic and globally engaged liberalism definitively aligned with Europe,” they added. “As Canada and the EU are both looking for reliable allies to weather the storm, this renewed western alliance could solidify around Ottawa and Brussels – anchored in shared democratic values and pragmatic leadership.”
