Despite the declared nationwide strike by the duo of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress,TUC, over the failure of the Federal Government to acede to their demand for higher minimum wage, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), is staying aloof from the industrial action and insisting of seeing to it that the Monday scheduled papers for students are written as planned.
The two unions had resorted to the planned nationwide strike on Monday, after a 4-hour meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly, NASS on Sunday evening in Abuja, failed to yield a fruitful outcome.
A statement by the Head of National Office, Branch Controller, WAEC, T.A.Y Lawson, on Monday, shunned the ongoing strike, insisting that the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE goes on as scheduled despite the nationwide strike.
The statement reads in part, “The attention of the management has been drawn to a notice of the commencement of the indefinite strike by NLC and TUC effective from Monday, 3rd June, 2024.
“Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled.”
iThe statement noted that despite identifying with the concern of the labour unions and the Nigerians generally, the examinations would go on across the member countries of WAEC and the Nigerian child should not be made to miss the exams.
It went ahead to state further that, “For the aforesaid reason, WAEC will conduct the exams and school principals, supervisors, parents and the general public should please take note and make adequate arrangements for their children to sit for the exam,”
The list of subjects to be conducted on Monday include Physics 3 (Practical) (Alternative B), Computer Studies 3 (Practical), Insurance 2 (Essay), and Insurance 1 (Objective).
The labour unions had lamented that the ₦30,000 minimum wage currently being paid the Nigerian workers longer is a far cry fry the present economic realities, even as it became noticed that not all the state governors are paying the wage award which already expired in April 2024, five years after the Minimum Wage Act of 2019 was signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Act should be reviewed every five years to meet with contemporary economic demands of workers.
